Mirena Side Effects Feature a New Wrinkle

A popular birth control device manufactured by Bayer and inserted permanently through the cervix has been associated with various adverse reactions. Mirena side effects have included uterine perforation when the device has migrated, over time, from its initial point of insertion.

But now there seems to be yet another concern. According to various lawsuits that have been filed, the active ingredient in the Mirena intrauterine contraceptive system (IUS), levonorgestrel, is associated with the onset of pseudo-tumor cerebri, or so it is alleged. Pseudo-tumor cerebri can reportedly lead to a buildup of fluid in the skull, potentially leading to blindness.

These Mirena side effects are in addition to other reported adverse reactions, which include ectopic pregnancy, intrauterine pregnancy, Group A strep infection, inflammation of the pelvis and other side effects.
Mirena uterine perforation can occur when the device, inserted vaginally through the cervix, migrates away from the original point of insertion and can travel throughout the abdomen following perforation of the uterine wall. This can result in organ damage and severe pain. Many patients have required a surgical procedure to have a wayward Mirena IUD removed.

This latest wrinkle, the development of pseudo-tumor cerebri, is just the latest concern to surface in recent months about a device that has proven popular due to its feature of “set it, and forget it.” Mirena has been a boon to women who wish to avoid unwanted pregnancies but react badly to traditional birth control products taken orally, or for those women who tend to be forgetful and have trouble remembering to take their daily pill. Dermal contraceptive patches can administer contraception for upwards of a month, v. the Mirena product that can and is expected to last up to five years before the spent device requires harvesting and replacement.

The Mirena device, which is prohibitively more expensive than traditional birth control products, is destined to be available to more women through expected changes in the so-called Obama-care program. Cost, for those unable to afford to pay, may no longer be a barrier.

An increase in Mirena use across a larger population segment will most assuredly increase the likelihood of Mirena birth control side effects.

What’s more, this more recent concern over pseudo-tumor cerebri has spawned lawsuits, given an allegation that Mirena manufacturer Bayer failed to adequately notate the potential for pseudo-tumor cerebri and the risk for related health issues on product labeling. According to reports, the US Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation is being lobbied to consolidate nine Mirena personal injury lawsuits in Federal Court in the Middle District of Tennessee.

Alleged Victims of Mirena Side Effects Claim Bayer Downplayed Risks Associated with IUD

New York, New York (PRWEB) May 09, 2014

Mirena lawsuits (http://www.themirenalawsuitcenter.com) continue to be filed in courts throughout the country on behalf of women who were allegedly harmed by the IUD, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. Most recently, a case was filed last month in the federal multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York that alleges Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals downplayed the risks associated with the contraceptive device. (Case No. 3:14-cv-00075-DRH-DGW)

"Our Firm is representing numerous Mirena lawsuit clients who also claim Bayer did not provide appropriate warnings about the risk of certain Mirena side effects," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free Mirena lawsuit evaluations to women who may have been injured due to the spontaneous migration of their IUD.

According to court documents, more than 1,200 Mirena lawsuits have been filed in courts around the country on behalf of women who were allegedly injured due to spontaneous migration of the IUD. These include nearly 500 Mirena lawsuits that have been consolidated for pretrial proceedings in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. (In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434) An additional 700 lawsuits have been filed in New Jersey's Bergen County Superior Court, where Bernstein Liebhard LLP is actively filing claims. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297)

Among other things, these lawsuits allege Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals failed to provide adequate warnings regarding the possibility of Mirena migration, and point out that the IUD's label only states that migration may occur if the uterus is punctured during insertion. The complaints also note that Bayer was cited by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 for a Mirena promotional campaign that the agency found to be misleading.

The Mirena IUD was approved by the FDA in 2000, and is now indicated as a method of contraception, and as a treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding in women who wish to use an IUD as their primary form of birth control. According to a report that aired on 7 Action News this past summer, the FDA has since received more than 70,000 complaints involving Mirena complications, including thousands that detail cases of device dislocation and uterine perforation.*

Compensation may be available to women who allegedly suffered uterine perforations and other Mirena side effects associated with spontaneous IUD migration. Find out more about the ongoing Mirena litigation by visiting Bernstein Liebhard LLP's website, or the Firm's

Mirena SIde Effects Led to Miscarriage

More than 800 Mirena lawsuits throughout the US have been filed by women claiming injuries caused by migration of the IUD. Recently, a number of women believe Mirena side effects have led to miscarriage, and in severe cases, hysterectomy.

Mirena Led to Miscarriage, Hysterectomy Mirena lawsuits claim that Bayer, the Mirena manufacturer,  failed to  warn women that the device had the risk of  spontaneous migration.  Instead, Bayer warned that migration  could only occur with Mirena  uterine perforation upon insertion  of the IUD. In other words, Bayer is  trying to blame the  physician. For many women who may never be able  to have  children again after the Mirena was removed, Bayer’s    explanation just adds insult to injury.

Susan says she is more fortunate than some women who don’t have any children. She had three normal pregnancies and three healthy children. After her third, she had the Mirena inserted but it had to be taken out after two years due to severe pelvic pain and cramping. “I recently got pregnant and had a horrible miscarriage. This was the first time I ever saw so much blood, and I endured so much pain, but the mental anguish is ongoing,” she says.
“My husband believes that Mirena plays a huge role in my miscarriage.”

Jackie, age 37, doesn’t have children. She had the Mirena inserted a year ago to help with heavy menstruation. She endured continual heavy bleeding, cramping and clotting, but her gynecologist said that was normal and to give it some time. “Last month I couldn’t take it anymore and booked an emergency appointment to have it removed,” says Jackie. “My doctor couldn't find the Mirena so he sent me for an ultrasound - they found the IUD in my uterus but hidden behind a huge fibroid.”

The Mirena had not perforated her uterus, but it had caused irreparable damage.

A few days later Jackie’s gynecologist phoned - with the worst news. “He told me the fibroid was so huge that I would need a hysterectomy,” says Jackie, crying. “I asked him if this happened because of the IUD but he was cagey and wouldn’t come right out and say so, but he didn’t say no either. I believe he is worried about a medical malpractice suit but I’m not blaming him. He said there could be a lot of reasons, but the only way to get this Mirena out of my uterus is to have an abdominal hysterectomy to remove my uterus and cervix.

“My surgery is scheduled for next month but I am trying to get a second opinion. Meanwhile, I’ve booked time off work - thankfully, my boss understands and I have a job to come back to. Although I have health insurance that covers most of the surgery, I won’t have an income for almost two months; that is when I made inquiries about a Mirena lawsuit.”

“I filed a Mirena claim with LaywersandSettlements after reading a story about a woman whose pap test showed abnormal cells on her cervix that was caused by the Mirena,” says Angela. “I had my Mirena removed two years ago and six months later my pap test came back with abnormal cells - I had always had a clean bill of health. I had to get a cone biopsy of my cervix. Last November my husband and I were ecstatic with the news that I was pregnant; we were planning on having a family. But last month I had a miscarriage - we lost our baby.

“I have heard many stories of women losing a baby during gestation after they had a Mirena removed. I had to get a D&C and after that a hysterectomy. I need to know if Mirena caused my hysterectomy as well as the loss of my baby.”
